Laura Betti was an Italian actress whose career featured intense, antinatural performances, frequently in bizarre, grotesque, or manic roles. She became a touchstone of auteur cinema through collaborations with pivotal figures of postwar Italian film such as Federico Fellini — in whose La Dolce Vita she made her debut — Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Bernardo Bertolucci. With Pasolini she forged a long friendship and artistic partnership: she appeared in seven of his films, including La ricotta, Teorema — a role that won her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress — and Salò. Bertolucci remembered her as the cruel Regina in Novecento, and she also had a part in Last Tango in Paris. She worked as well with genre directors like Mario Bava. Beyond her film work, Betti devoted herself to music and to cultural and political activism, becoming a figure associated with the literary circles and Marxist currents of 1970s Italy. In 2001 she directed a documentary about Pasolini and subsequently organized and donated extensive documentation, books, and photographs that led to the creation of a Pasolini study center and to a fonds formed from her own archive. Her legacy remains linked to those intense performances and to her role as guardian of Pasolini’s memory, affirming her place in Italy’s twentieth-century cultural history.
