Laura Marx, also known as Jenny Laura Marx, was a socialist activist and translator associated with Karl Marx’s circle. The second daughter of Karl Marx and Jenny von Westphalen, she married the revolutionary writer Paul Lafargue in 1868; together they carried out extensive political work in France and Spain. The couple spent decades promoting Marxism, translating key works — including texts by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels — into French and helping circulate socialist ideas in Western Europe. For much of their lives they received financial support from Friedrich Engels and inherited part of his estate after his death. Laura’s life combined activism, translation, and intellectual organization within the socialist movement of the late nineteenth century. Her translations and collaborative work with Lafargue helped introduce Marxism beyond the German-speaking world, strengthening networks of activists and debate. The couple ended their lives by suicide in 1911; they presented the act as a conscious decision in the face of physical decline and the inability to continue working for the cause to which they had devoted themselves, an event that resonated among contemporaries such as Vladimir Lenin.
