Laura Nyro was an American songwriter and singer known for her emotive voice (a three-octave mezzo-soprano) and for songs that combined pop structures with sophisticated arrangements and influences from jazz and classical music. She won critical acclaim with the albums Eli and the Thirteenth Confession (1968) and New York Tendaberry (1969), records regarded as milestones of her artistic maturity and touchstones for contemporary performers and musicians.
Beyond her own recordings, Nyro had substantial commercial impact through versions of her songs recorded by other artists: the 5th Dimension, Barbra Streisand, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Peter, Paul and Mary, and Three Dog Night scored hits with her compositions such as "Wedding Bell Blues," "Stoney End," "And When I Die," and "Eli's Comin'." Her work became a rich source for pop and soul repertoires in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Throughout her career Nyro was also seen as an influential figure among her peers—musicians including Elton John cited her with admiration—and her reputation grew after her death. She received posthumous honors, including induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing her legacy as a songwriter whose writing and performances spanned generations.
