Laure Manaudou is a retired French swimmer known for Olympic, World and European titles in freestyle and backstroke. She rose to international prominence with the 400 m freestyle gold at the 2004 Athens Games — France’s first Olympic gold in women’s swimming — and also won silver in the 800 m and bronze in the 100 m backstroke at those Games, becoming one of the few French women to win three medals at a single Olympics. Between 2005 and 2007 she established herself as a leading middle-distance swimmer: she won World and European titles, broke the world records in the 400 m and 200 m freestyle, and dominated the European circuit, matching historic marks for individual titles. Her undefeated run in the 400 m from 2004 to 2008 and record-breaking performances that stood for months cemented her status. Her career also had setbacks: an underwhelming performance at the 2008 Olympics and an early retirement announced in 2009, followed by a brief return to competition in 2011 and participation at the 2012 Games. Outside the pool, Manaudou remained a highly visible public figure in France, leaving a pioneering legacy for subsequent generations of national swimmers.
