Lazare Ponticelli was an Italian‑born French veteran of the First World War and an entrepreneur in the metallurgical sector. He emigrated to France as a young man and, having lied about his age, enlisted in the French Foreign Legion in 1914; in 1915 he was compulsorily transferred to the Italian Army, serving with the Alpini and being wounded and gassed in actions against the Austro‑Hungarian forces. His combat memoirs made him a trenchant critic of war, emphasizing the futility of the conflict and the common humanity of the soldiers. After the war, Ponticelli founded in Paris, together with his brothers, Ponticelli Frères, a company specializing in piping and metal structures that grew to operate internationally, played a role in the industrial effort during the Second World War, and provided support to the Resistance. He became a French citizen in 1939 and ran the firm until his retirement in 1960. Recognized as the last veteran officially associated with France from the Great War, he took part in Armistice ceremonies until 2007. He refused to display his honors, keeping his medals in a shoebox and asking that public tributes highlight the ordinary soldiers who fell in the trenches.
