Lea Grundig was a German painter and graphic artist of Jewish origin whose work denounced the violences of Nazism and the condition of those persecuted. Trained at the academies in Dresden, she joined left-wing artistic and political circles from a young age, became a member of the Communist Party and co-founded the Association of Revolutionary Artists. In the 1930s her graphic cycles — including Unterm Hakenkreuz, Der Jude ist schuld! and Krieg droht! — recorded the growing climate of oppression and antisemitism in Germany. Persecuted by the Nazi regime, she had exhibitions banned, was arrested and lived in exile during World War II, first in Bratislava and later in Palestine, where she continued to exhibit and to collaborate with the local communist press. She returned to Dresden in 1949 and took an active role in the cultural life of East Germany: she taught, held institutional posts and received multiple state honors. Her artistic output and political activity made her a prominent figure in the East German art scene, with official recognition and a documentary legacy preserved in institutional archives. Grundig’s work remains cited for its political commitment and for its graphic representation of violence and exile in the twentieth century.
