Lee Edward Evans was an American sprinter who specialized in the 400 m, a two-time Olympic champion and former world record holder. He dominated the event from his teens and at San Jose State University (1964–1966), where he was notable for his rivalry with Tommie Smith. In 1966 he was part of the 4x400 m relay that first broke the three-minute barrier; in 1967 he won the 400 m at the Pan American Games. At the Mexico City Olympic Games (1968) Evans won the 400 m in an Olympic and world record time (43.85 s), a mark that remained among the best in history for decades, and ran on the gold‑medal 4x400 m team that set a new world record (2:56.16). His political stance also marked those Games: during the relay medal ceremony he and Ron Freeman wore black berets, in solidarity with civil‑rights protests by athletes such as Tommie Smith and John Carlos. After his competitive career, Evans dedicated himself to developing athletics, serving for more than four decades as a program director in African countries and as a college coach in the United States. Recognized both for his sporting achievements and his activism for Black rights, he died in 2021 in Nigeria.
