Lennart Bernadotte, born Prince Gustaf Lennart Nicolaus Paul Bernadotte, was a well-known figure of the European aristocracy who chose a life outside the direct line of succession. He renounced his rights to the Swedish throne to marry a non-noble woman, a decision that defined his personal life and enabled an independent career free from dynastic obligations. He was later granted by the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg the title Prince Bernadotte and, hereditarily, Count of Wisborg.
A direct descendant of the Swedish, Russian and Greek royal houses, his biography reflects the complex family networks of twentieth-century European royalty. Beyond ceremonial roles, he became known for work in landscaping, photography and film, developing projects related to the preservation and enhancement of estates, especially on the island of Mainau, where he lived and worked for many years.
He first married Karin Nissvandt in 1932, with whom he had four children; later he formed a new family on Mainau and had five more children. His legacy combines the voluntary abandonment of dynastic privileges with cultural contributions and the management of landscaped spaces that brought him recognition beyond noble circles.
