Leo Rucka (Leopold Victor Rucka) was an American football player whose notable career spanned high school, college and a brief stint in the NFL. A graduate of Crosby High School, he excelled in multiple sports before joining the Rice University football program. As co‑captain of the Rice Owls in 1953, he helped secure a share of the Southwest Conference title and the win over Alabama in the 1954 Cotton Bowl, a season in which he was named first‑team All‑Southwest Conference at center. Drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 1954 draft, Rucka’s professional career was interrupted by military service: he served as an aviation engineer in the Far East during the Korean War for about 20 months, during which he also played on military teams and was selected to the All‑Service Team. After returning, he appeared in five games for the 49ers in the 1956 season, with an official record of one fumble recovery. Known to teammates as “the Quiet Man,” Rucka’s college career was later honored with induction into the Rice Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996. After his athletic career he worked for many years in industry and maintained a long, large family life.
