Leo Vroman was a hematologist and researcher, as well as a notable poet and illustrator. Trained in biology, he completed a doctorate on thromboplastin and pursued a scientific career in the United States, where he worked in hematology and published studies on the behavior of blood in contact with surfaces, contributing to the field of biomaterials. Alongside his scientific career, he built a substantial body of work in Dutch, publishing multiple poetry collections, books of drawings, and diaries. His poetic output, released over decades, established him as an influential figure in twentieth‑century Dutch literature, with collected editions and illustrated booklets. His wartime experience and time in prisoner camps during the occupation of Southeast Asia left a lasting mark on his personal life and artistic work. After World War II he settled in the United States, where he became a citizen and continued both creative and scientific activity into old age. His legacy is twofold: significant scientific contributions to hematology and biomaterials, and an extensive poetic and visual oeuvre that earned him literary and cultural recognition.
