Leon Edel was an American-born literary critic and biographer who became a Canadian citizen, best known for his magnum opus: a five-volume biography of Henry James. His extensive research on James, founded on privileged access to correspondence and archival material, made him an authority on the subject and won him major honors, including the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in the 1960s. A McGill graduate who also studied at the University of Paris, Edel belonged to the Canadian modernist circle connected with the McGill Fortnightly Review and pursued an academic career that included Sir George Williams, New York University, and the University of Hawaiʻi. During World War II he served as one of the Ritchie Boys, a chapter of his life he later recounted in memoirs. Beyond James, Edel published studies on Willa Cather, James Joyce, and the Bloomsbury Group, and edited critical editions of literary letters and diaries, including those of Edmund Wilson. His conception of literary biography emphasized bringing the author’s subjective perceptions into critical readings of their work. While some of his conclusions have been revised by later scholarship, his documentary and editorial work remains a standard reference for James studies.
