Leslie E. Robertson was an American structural engineer best known for leading the structural design of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. His career was notable for innovations in skyscraper systems, such as the development of the “tube design,” which allowed column‑free interiors and an external façade of columns that carried much of the loads. These solutions influenced the design of highly complex and efficient structures in subsequent decades.
Beyond the World Trade Center, Robertson worked on landmark buildings including the U.S. Steel Tower in Pittsburgh, the Shanghai World Financial Center and the Bank of China in Hong Kong, as well as on bridges, theaters and museums. He also took part in critical investigations and repairs, notably the 1978 structural reassessment of the Citigroup Center, contributing to practices for wind engineering and responses to design failures.
Founder of Leslie E. Robertson Associates (later See Robertson Structural Engineers), he received multiple international honors, including medals and lifetime achievement awards for innovation in structural design. His technical legacy lies in integrating structural theory, wind‑action research and construction solutions that expanded the limits of tall‑building engineering.
