Lester James Maitland was a U.S. military officer and aviation pioneer whose career spanned from the end of World War I through World War II and beyond. In the 1920s he made his mark as a test pilot and air racer, setting speed records and earning praise from contemporaries such as Orville Wright. He held operations and command positions in the Air Service/Air Corps and took part in demonstrations and projects intended to underscore the value of air power. Maitland’s best‑known achievement came in June 1927, when, together with Lieutenant Albert F. Hegenberger, he completed the first transpacific flight between the coast of California and Hawaii aboard the transport Bird of Paradise. The nearly 3,900 km crossing, which took about 26 hours, was crucial for aerial navigation and earned the pair the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Mackay Trophy. After World War II he continued serving in state air service, reaching the rank of brigadier general in the Michigan Air National Guard, and served as director of aeronautics and civil defense commissions. He later left the military to become an Episcopal minister, leaving a legacy tied to early aviation and the development of aerial navigation techniques.
