Linda Gray Sexton is an American writer, novelist and memoirist known for addressing mental health, suicide and family dynamics, especially regarding the literary legacy of her mother, the poet Anne Sexton. A 1975 graduate of Harvard, she has worked as an author of fiction and nonfiction, an editor of posthumous collections, and a literary critic for publications such as The New York Times Book Review, The Chicago Tribune and The Los Angeles Times. Her book Searching for Mercy Street: My Journey Back to My Mother (1994) is a personal account of growing up in an environment shaped by mental illness and her mother’s suicide; the book was featured in The New York Times and drew interest from the film industry. Sexton also wrote Half in Love: Surviving the Legacy of Suicide (2011), which examines the intergenerational transmission of suffering, and Bespotted (2014), a memoir that blends humor and reflection in its account of the family’s relationship with their Dalmatians. In addition to her own books, she has edited letters and writings by Anne Sexton, helping preserve and reassess the poet’s legacy. Her public work combines intimate, engaged writing with an emphasis on resilience, memory and the therapeutic role of literature.
