Linus Carl Pauling was an American chemist and biochemist recognized as one of the central figures in twentieth‑century chemistry. A pioneer in applying quantum mechanics to chemistry, he became notable for his work on the nature of chemical bonds, which earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954. As a crystallographer and specialist in X‑ray diffraction, he made decisive contributions to determining the structures of proteins and crystals, and is considered one of the founders of molecular biology.

During his career at institutions such as Caltech, Pauling formulated influential rules for crystal structure and published extensively on chemical bonding and molecular structures. His research brought him close to the elucidation of the DNA double helix later discovered by Watson and Crick. Beyond chemistry, he worked in fields as varied as metallurgy, immunology, and radioactivity.

Pauling also became prominent as a peace activist: in 1962 he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his campaign against nuclear testing, becoming the only person to receive two unshared Nobel Prizes. In his later decades he promoted ideas about vitamin C and orthomolecular medicine that generated controversy with conventional medicine. His legacy combines fundamental scientific contributions with a high‑profile public role on social and health issues.
