Lizzy van Dorp (Elisabeth Carolina van Dorp) was a jurist, economist, parliamentarian and activist for women’s rights in the Netherlands. Trained in law at Leiden University, she became in 1901 the first Dutch woman to obtain that degree and, two years later, the first female lawyer to appear before the Supreme Court. Her doctoral thesis dealt with compensation for damage caused by public authorities and, among other points, defended resistance to restrictions on the work of married women.
Throughout her career Van Dorp combined legal practice with intellectual work: she joined the editorial team of the journal De Economist and published widely on economic theory, wages, capital and social policy. In the 1920s she moved closer to orthodox liberalism and, between 1922 and 1925, represented that position in the House of Representatives, where she was recorded as committed to women’s rights.
Criticized both by radical currents of the women’s movement and by economic opponents, her output includes several essays and books on income distribution and unemployment, culminating in the work A Simple Theory of Capital, Wages, Profit and Loss (1937). During the Second World War she was interned by the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies and died in 1945 in a detention camp in Java. Her legacy combines professional pioneering, academic contribution to economics and institutional advocacy of women’s suffrage.
