Lois Moran (Lois Darlington Dowling) was an American actress, singer and dancer whose career spanned the 1920s through the 1950s, with notable work in both silent and sound film and in musical theatre. Partly trained in Europe, where she joined the Paris Opera ballet, she began in French cinema before settling in Hollywood, appearing in roughly thirty films between 1924 and 1932. She worked with directors such as Tod Browning, Henry King and Michael Curtiz, in projects ranging from silent dramas to early sound pictures. On stage, she appeared on Broadway in the early 1930s, joining the casts of plays and two Gershwin brothers’ musicals, Of Thee I Sing and Let ’Em Eat Cake, a production that placed her in the realm of major American musical theatre. Her career combined international experience with collaborations with prominent creators of the era. After marrying in 1935, she stepped away from film to focus on family and returned only sporadically to television in the 1950s, including a regular role on the series Waterfront. Moran’s career is remembered for a successful transition from silent to sound film and for her presence in notable productions of the period, with credits in theatre, film and television.
