Lope de Vega (Félix Lope de Vega y Carpio) was a Spanish playwright, poet, and novelist, a key figure of the Golden Age and a major name in Hispanic Baroque literature. Praised by contemporaries such as Miguel de Cervantes and later admired by Goethe, he transformed Spanish theatre by making it a popular cultural form and, together with Calderón and Tirso de Molina, helped shape its dramatic characteristics.
His output was colossal: about 3,000 sonnets, roughly 500 plays, as well as novels, novellas, and epic poems, which earned him both admiration and envy among his peers. He developed dramatic techniques such as the interweaving of plots (imbróglio) and enriched comic characterization with figures like the donaire.
His intense personal life—marked by successive loves, marriages, scandals, and military service—influenced his work and career. He participated in literary academies and held posts in noble households, and, already in the seventeenth century, he turned to religious themes and entered the priesthood.
Lope de Vega’s legacy endures in the prominence he gave to popular theatre and in the vast corpus that remains a reference for studies of Spanish Baroque literature.
