Lori Elaine Lightfoot is an American attorney and politician, known for serving as the 56th mayor of Chicago from 2019 to 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, she rose to prominence as the first Black woman and the first LGBTQ person to lead the city; she was also the second woman and the third Black person to hold the mayoralty. A law graduate of the University of Chicago, Lightfoot worked as a federal prosecutor in the Northern District of Illinois and was a partner at the law firm Mayer Brown. Before being elected mayor, she held municipal administration roles, including president of the Chicago Police Board and coordinator of the Chicago Police Accountability Task Force, positions in which she oversaw and investigated police conduct. Elected in 2019, she won the runoff by a large margin and implemented policies such as raising the municipal minimum wage and launching affordable housing programs, along with urban revitalization initiatives. Her administration, however, faced public criticism—particularly over public safety and the response to the COVID-19 pandemic—and in 2023 she did not advance to the runoff in her reelection bid.
