Lothar Herbert Matthäus is a former German player and coach, best known for his career as a midfielder and libero. He captained West Germany to victory at the 1990 World Cup and received major individual honors, including European Footballer of the Year and FIFA World Player in 1991 — to date the only German to receive that distinction. His club career includes notable spells at Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayern Munich and Internazionale. In Italy he won the 1988–89 Serie A title and the Supercoppa Italiana; at Inter he was also a key figure in the team that won the 1990–91 UEFA Cup. With Bayern he secured multiple Bundesliga and domestic cup titles and took part in the campaign that brought the club to the 1999 Champions League final. Matthäus is remembered for his technical efficiency, tactical vision and longevity — one of the few players to appear in five World Cups. At the same time, his combative personality earned him a reputation for controversy and affected how he was received in his coaching career, where he did not achieve the same success as he did as a player.
