Lou “The Toe” Groza was an American player who served as a placekicker and offensive tackle, spending his entire 21-season career with the Cleveland Browns in the AAFC and NFL. Known for combining accuracy with power, he retired in 1967 as the professional game’s leader in kicks and points, and set distance and field-goal total records in an era when long attempts were uncommon. His presence helped the Browns win eight league championships, including the undefeated 1948 season; one notable moment was a 53-yard field goal, then the longest in professional history. Groza briefly interrupted his career with an injury in 1959, returned in 1961, and was part of the 1964 championship roster. Recognized for his influence on the development of the kicking specialty, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1974. After retiring from playing he worked in the insurance industry and served as a club ambassador; his legacy is honored by the award that bears his name, given to the best college kicker in the United States.
