Virginia Woolf was an English writer, essayist and editor whose work shaped twentieth‑century modernism. Recognized for her pioneering use of stream of consciousness, she became known for novels such as Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse and Orlando, which explore subjectivity, time and social relations with an innovative style. A member of the Bloomsbury Group, Woolf was active in the vibrant London intellectual circle between the wars, taking part in the period’s artistic and cultural debates. Together with her husband Leonard Woolf she founded the Hogarth Press, which played an important role in promoting modernist authors and ideas. Beyond her novels, her essays — including A Room of One's Own — combined aesthetic reflection with questions of gender and autonomy, coining phrases that became touchstones in studies of women and literature. Her personal life, marked by psychological crises, and the subsequent critical reevaluation helped fuel intense academic interest from the 1970s and 1980s onward. Woolf’s legacy remains central to modern literature: her formal experiments and concerns with voice, memory and identity continue to influence writers, critics and fields such as gender studies and literary theory.
