Louis Rouffe (Louis-Auguste César Rouffe) was a prominent 19th-century French mime, recognized as the successor to Charles Deburau in the Pierrot tradition. Trained initially in comedy, he built his career chiefly at the Alcazar in Marseille, where he led his own company, worked as a teacher and director, and popularized a pantomime form that was already in decline elsewhere in France. His artistic activity also included seasons in southern cities from Nice to Bordeaux, sometimes presenting repertoires enriched by librettos from Horace Bertin. Rouffe enjoyed major success for about a decade, playing Pierrot—occasionally appearing only with the character’s customary white face—and played an important role in Marseille’s theatrical life of the period. Rouffe’s personal and professional life intersected with figures from the local artistic scene; he was the father of the actress Alida Rouffe, later known for Marcel Pagnol’s films. Tuberculosis interrupted his career: after a brief convalescence in Algiers he returned to the stage and died in December 1885. His death mobilized the city: more than ten thousand people followed his funeral procession and the press organized a subscription to erect a monument in his honor.
