Louis Vierne was a French composer, organist, and teacher whose work belongs to the great traditions of the French organ repertoire. Almost completely blind from childhood due to congenital cataracts, he showed remarkable musical talent early and trained at the Paris Conservatory. He became assistant to Charles‑Marie Widor and in 1900 took the position of titular organist at Notre‑Dame Cathedral, which he held until his death.
His catalogue includes organ symphonies, chamber music, choral works, and pieces for piano, many of them marked by rich harmonic color and a dramatic intensity linked to the personal hardships he faced. Vierne also distinguished himself as a pedagogue: he taught generations of organists and composers, among them Lili and Nadia Boulanger, Marcel Dupré, and Gaston Litaize.
Throughout his life he worked on the maintenance and restoration of the great organ at Notre‑Dame, even making trips to raise funds. His output is frequently recorded and studied, remaining a standard in the Franco‑Belgian organ repertoire of the early twentieth century. He died at the end of a recital at Notre‑Dame in 1937.
