Luc Montagnier was a French physician and virologist whose career was defined by the 1983 discovery at the Institut Pasteur of the retrovirus associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV). That contribution, the subject of international scientific dispute in subsequent years, earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2008 and secured his place in the history of infectious disease research.

These positions were widely criticized and rejected by the scientific community, affecting his reputation among specialists.
His legacy remains dual: he is recognized for the discovery that transformed the fight against AIDS and, at the same time, remembered for controversies that prompted debate about credibility and the limits of scientific authority.
