Lúcia de Jesus Rosa dos Santos was a Portuguese Discalced Carmelite nun, known as one of the three children who reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Fátima. As a child she was the principal interlocutor of the visions and became the keeper of the so‑called “Secret of Fátima,” a role that shaped her entire public and religious life. After the Church officially recognized the apparitions in 1930, interest in the events at Fátima grew internationally, bringing increasing attention to Lúcia and prompting clerical decisions to protect her and guide her into religious life. She entered religious communities while still young — studying with the Sisters of Saint Dorothy and later professing as a Discalced Carmelite in Coimbra — where she lived in enclosure and wrote memoirs and texts about the apparitions and the messages attributed to the Virgin. Her life included meetings with popes and ecclesiastical proceedings that led to the opening of her cause for beatification; on 22 June 2023 she was declared Venerable by Pope Francis. She died in 2005 at the Carmelo of Saint Teresa in Coimbra, and her remains were transferred to the Sanctuary of Fátima, consolidating her place in Portuguese devotional memory and religious heritage.
