Lucien Schnegg was a French sculptor active at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, known for helping mediate a transition between Rodin’s expressive intensity and a return to more classical forms. Trained initially in the tradition of direct carving and as a pupil in Alexandre Falguière’s studio, Schnegg early gained recognition for portraits and busts, regularly exhibiting at the Salons between 1887 and 1909. Close to Auguste Rodin, he worked as a praticien for him from 1902, but he also gathered around him a generation interested in renewing sculpture—the so‑called “Bande à Schnegg,” which included figures such as Charles Despiau and Jane Poupelet. His bust of Jane Poupelet (1897) earned attention and is among the pieces listed in public collections. Schnegg’s work combines a delicacy in portraiture with a taste for architectural ornament inspired by the great classical periods; for this he received praise from contemporaries and influenced younger colleagues. His premature death cut short a promising career, but he left works in French museums and a historical place in the renewal of sculpture between 1900 and 1914.
