Lúcio Costa was a Brazilian architect, urban planner, and professor, recognized as one of the pioneers of modernist architecture in the country. Trained at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes, his career moved from an initial neoclassical phase to a modern language influenced by Le Corbusier, producing works and projects that shaped Brazil’s urban identity in the twentieth century. As a director and teacher he played a transformative role in architectural and fine arts education, influencing generations of professionals, including Oscar Niemeyer. He took part in the team for the Palácio Gustavo Capanema and designed the Brazil Pavilion for the 1939 New York World’s Fair, demonstrating a proposal for a light, fluid architecture with an international presence. His most emblematic work is the Pilot Plan for Brasília, which won the 1957 competition and is noted for combining modernism, developmentalist thinking, and political purpose in a new capital. The design expressed modernist urban principles — a road hierarchy favoring the automobile, built blocks set within green areas, and a monumental scale — and became a global reference. Throughout his life he coordinated urban plans in Brazil and abroad, collaborated with the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage, and left a lasting legacy in professional training and the Brazilian urban landscape.
