Lucrezia Borgia was a central figure in Italian courts at the turn of the 15th to the 16th century, known chiefly for her role within the Borgia family — daughter of Rodrigo Borgia, who became Pope Alexander VI — and for the arranged marriages that served political aims. Raised at the papal court and in noble households, her life was shaped by dynastic alliances and the intrigues surrounding the papacy and the major regional powers of Renaissance Italy. She married several times according to political strategy: among her husbands were members of the Sforza and Aragon families and other influential houses. Those marriages, and the disputes that accompanied them — including annulments, public accusations and episodes of violence attributed to members of her family — shaped her public reputation and later narratives about her role in the period’s rivalries. At the same time, Lucrezia managed estates and received lordships granted by the pope, taking part in the government of territories such as Nepi, Spoleto and Foligno. Her legacy is ambiguous: seen by some as a pawn of family politics and by others as an educated lady and regional ruler, she remains an emblematic figure of the Italian Renaissance and of the controversies that surrounded the House of Borgia.
