Ludwig Bieberbach was a German mathematician whose work influenced the theory of functions and algebraic geometry. Trained in Göttingen, he produced fundamental work in complex analysis and interdisciplinary applications, publishing more than one hundred and twenty papers and several textbooks and reference works in the early decades of the twentieth century. His research included contributions to dynamics in several complex variables and results that engage with those of Fatou. In 1911 he completed a habilitation on groups of Euclidean motions that helped advance progress on Hilbert’s 18th problem; in 1916 he formulated the famous Bieberbach conjecture on injective holomorphic functions on the unit disk, a conjecture later proved by Louis de Branges. He is also remembered for a theorem concerning space groups and for academic collaborations, such as the book he wrote with Issai Schur. Bieberbach’s career was marked by active involvement with German nationalism of the period: he joined organizations associated with the Nazi regime and took part in efforts to exclude Jewish colleagues, a stance that led to his dismissal from academic positions in 1945. After the war he again received academic invitations, but his scientific legacy remains entwined with that moral and historical controversy.
