Luigi Numa Lorenzo Einaudi was an Italian economist, professor and statesman, recognized as one of the central figures in the formation of the Italian Republic. He taught at institutions such as the universities of Turin, the Polytechnic University of Turin and Bocconi, and was known as a theorist of economic liberalism — he coined the term "liberismo" in the Italian debate — placing himself within the classical tradition alongside contemporaries like Gustavo Del Vecchio. He also worked in economic journalism, contributing to La Stampa and Il Corriere della Sera and serving as The Economist’s financial correspondent. During the fascist period he maintained an anti‑fascist stance, signing an intellectuals’ manifesto in 1925 and resuming journalistic activity after 1943; while in exile he also lectured at the Graduate Institute in Geneva. In the postwar period he served as governor of the Bank of Italy (1945–1948), minister of finance and deputy prime minister, and took part in the institutional transition that led to the new republican assembly. In 1948 he was elected the second President of the Italian Republic, a post he held until 1955; after his term he became a life senator. His legacy includes academic influence, contributions to liberal thought and institutions bearing his name, such as the economic institute affiliated with the Bank of Italy.
