Lyman Spitzer was an American physicist and astrophysicist whose career decisively shaped twentieth-century astronomy and plasma physics. A long-time professor and director of the Astrophysics Department at Princeton, Spitzer contributed to the theory of stellar dynamics, to the understanding of plasma behavior, and to the study of globular clusters. He was a pioneer in proposing space-based telescopes as a means to obtain sharper images of the universe, a role that tied him to the efforts that culminated in the development of the Hubble Space Telescope. He also led research initiatives in thermonuclear fusion and founded Project Matterhorn, which evolved into the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, a major U.S. center for plasma studies. Author of influential technical works, including Physics of Fully Ionized Gases and Dynamical Evolution of Globular Clusters, Spitzer received numerous international honors, among them the Royal Astronomical Society’s Gold Medal and the Crafoord Prize. A NASA infrared space telescope was named for him, recognizing his legacy in instrumentation and astronomical observation.
