Lytton Strachey was a British biographer, literary critic, and writer associated with the Bloomsbury intellectual circle. He became famous for revitalizing biography: his works mixed irony, concision, and critical reappraisal of historical figures, breaking with the usual laudatory tone. The book Eminent Victorians (1918) and, above all, Queen Victoria (1921) cemented his reputation by depicting public figures in a spare style that highlighted their personal contradictions. His output includes essays on French literature and profiles of historical figures, along with theatrical studies and posthumous writings assembled by editors and biographers. His clear style and revisionist method influenced modern biography and literary criticism in the early twentieth century. Working amid intense social and cultural change in Victorian and post‑Victorian England, Strachey became a touchstone for critical boldness and for his capacity to demystify historical myths. His legacy persists in the way biography can combine literary craft with intellectual analysis.
