Madalyn Murray O’Hair was an American lawyer, activist and leader known for her central role in the atheist movement and for defending the separation of church and state. In 1963 she founded the organization American Atheists and led its public outreach for decades, editing American Atheist Magazine and serving as its principal spokesperson in campaigns and debates on secularism and civil rights. Her public profile rose with the lawsuit Murray v. Curlett, which challenged mandatory prayers and Bible readings in Baltimore public schools; the case helped prompt the Supreme Court decision that banned official religious practices in schools and thrust O’Hair into the center of national debate. Her combative stance and high-profile exposure brought her fame, controversy and attacks, including the label “the most hated woman in America” in a widely circulated magazine. In the following decades she maintained intense media and organizational activity, organizing campaigns, radio programs and public confrontations with religious leaders. Her end was tragic: in 1995 she, her son and her granddaughter disappeared; subsequent investigations revealed they had been murdered by former associates. Her legacy remains tied to defending a secular state and to the visibility of atheist activism in the U.S.
