Mae Clarke (born Violet Mary Klotz) was an American film actress who worked mainly in the 1930s and 1940s. She became known for memorable roles in pre-Code sound-era films, notably as Elizabeth in Frankenstein (1931) and for her appearance in The Public Enemy (1931), a scene that became famous in popular culture. She worked for studios such as Universal and appeared opposite actors including Boris Karloff and James Cagney. Her artistic training included dance and vaudeville performances, which led her into film and to an early career in leading roles. During the 1930s she maintained a steady presence in studio productions, although she was gradually cast more often in lower-budget pictures. Even so, she had prominent parts in films such as The Front Page (1931) and Waterloo Bridge. In the 1940s she began to appear more frequently in supporting casts and, in subsequent years, accumulated appearances in notable films and television series, with roles continuing into 1970, when she ended her career and devoted herself to teaching acting. Her legacy is tied to her presence in emblematic works of classic American cinema and to scenes that endured in the cultural memory.
