Magnus Hirschfeld was a German physician and sexologist who pioneered advocacy for the rights of homosexual and trans people in the early 20th century. Trained in philosophy, philology and medicine, he settled in Berlin and in 1897 founded the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee, an organization that sought repeal of Paragraph 175 and argued that scientific knowledge could reduce stigma against sexual minorities. In 1919 he established the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, which combined a clinic, research activities and an extensive library on sexuality, as well as an educational museum. The institute became an international reference: it attracted patients, students and researchers and organized public debates, congresses and publications, including the film Anders als die Andern, one of the earliest works to address homosexuality. Attacked by völkisch groups and later by the Nazis, Hirschfeld saw his institute looted and its library burned in 1933; he was forced into exile and had his citizenship revoked. His work — including the theory of a “third sex” and his campaigning for legal reform — left a lasting legacy for sexology and for LGBTQ rights movements.
