Manolete, the stage name of Manuel Laureano Rodríguez Sánchez, was a Spanish matador whose career in the 1930s and 1940s had a profound impact on bullfighting. Born into a family tradition of bullfighters, he rose quickly: he confirmed his alternativa in Madrid in 1939 and led the rankings in 1943 and 1944. His technique and aesthetics renewed the corrida, emphasizing the muleta faena, the search for the sitio — the geometric position that provokes and controls the bull’s charge — and a restrained, extended rhythm that sought beauty and composure in the human confrontation with the animal. The manoletina, a pass whose popularization is credited to him, embodies this emphasis on sobriety and elegance. His influence crossed generations of matadors, cited as a model for later figures and as a dividing line between classical traditions and new forms of toreo. At the same time, his legacy drew criticism for monotony and for tendencies said to have altered the treatment of bulls. Manolete died from wounds suffered in the Linares bullring in August 1947, an episode that enshrined his figure in Spain’s collective memory. Since then his life and death have inspired books, songs and films, cementing him as one of the central personalities of 20th-century bullfighting.
