Manuel Álvarez Bravo was one of the central figures in twentieth‑century Mexican photography, working as a still photographer and cinematographer and influencing generations with his poetic vision of everyday life. Trained at the Academy of San Carlos and introduced to the field by figures such as Hugo Brehme, Tina Modotti, and Edward Weston, he developed a distinct visual language characterized by juxtaposition, the isolation of details, and a geometric rigor that turns the familiar into enigma. His work engages with Mexican tradition and culture, often using suggestive titles that extend the evocative power of the images. In the 1930s and 1940s he moved closer to cinema—collaborating on projects such as ¡Que Viva México! and directing short films and one feature—broadening his visual and narrative practice. Recognized nationally and internationally, he received awards including the National Prize for Arts and Sciences (1975), the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (1981), and the Hasselblad Award (1984). Donations to the National Institute of Fine Arts and collections acquired by the Museum of Modern Art consolidated his institutional legacy and helped found Mexico’s first photography museum.
