Manuel de Falla was one of the leading Spanish composers of the early 20th century, whose work engaged deeply with the Iberian musical tradition. Trained in piano and composition, he became known for integrating elements of Andalusian flamenco — especially cante jondo — into art music, under the influence of his teacher Felipe Pedrell. That cultural fusion shaped his output and helped forge a renewed nationalist musical language. His first major work was the one-act opera La Vida Breve (1905, revised before its 1913 premiere), and over his career he composed pieces that became benchmarks for modern Spanish music. He also worked as a pianist and was at the center of the artistic and intellectual circles of his time, maintaining relationships with figures in literature and the arts. The Spanish Civil War and the victory of Franco’s forces led him into exile in Argentina, where he died in 1946; his remains were later transferred to Cádiz. His legacy endures through institutional tributes and recognition of the importance of his synthesis of popular tradition and art-music language.
