Marcel Dalio, born Marcel-Benoît Blauschild, was a French actor whose long career spanned nearly 150 films. Trained at the Conservatoire de Paris, he established himself in cinema in the 1930s and 1940s, gaining distinction with roles in classics such as Jean Renoir’s La Grande Illusion and La Règle du Jeu, and in Julien Duvivier’s Pépé le Moko. Of Romanian Jewish descent, Dalio’s life was profoundly affected by World War II: he left occupied France in 1940 and reached the United States after a long and troubled journey, while his family fell under Nazi persecution. In Hollywood he appeared in about 19 films during the war, often cast in stereotypical French roles, notably in Casablanca and To Have and Have Not. After the conflict he returned to France and remained active in film in the following decades, alternating between French, British and American productions. His filmography also includes Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Sabrina. Dalio died in Paris in 1983, leaving a reputation as a versatile character actor with a notable presence in European cinema and significant supporting roles in Hollywood.
