Marcel-Louis Baugniet was a Belgian artist associated with the avant‑gardes of the twentieth century, recognized as one of the most important figures in Belgian visual arts. Trained at the Brussels academy, he associated with figures such as Paul Delvaux and René Magritte and engaged with Parisian artistic circles, where he kept contact with modern artists like Fernand Léger. His work shows the influence of the Bauhaus and the De Stijl movement, and affinities with Le Corbusier, Sonia Delaunay and Henry Van de Velde.
Beyond painting, Baugniet worked in collage, set design, poster art, tapestry, commercial illustration, ceramics and furniture design, and he also wrote art criticism. In the 1920s he collaborated with dancer and choreographer Marguerite Acarin (Akarova), for whom he created costumes and sets; their professional relationship continued even after the couple separated.
After World War II he concentrated mainly on collages and furniture drawings, selling his designs from a shop in Brussels. His work was the subject of a major retrospective at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Liège in 2001, which highlighted the range of his production and his importance in the Belgian art scene.
