Marco Antônio de Oliveira Maciel was a politician, lawyer and professor of public international law with a long career in both state and federal government. An elected deputy at the state and federal levels in the early decades of his career, he served as President of the Chamber of Deputies (1977–1979) and later as Governor of Pernambuco, a three-term Senator and a minister at key moments of the democratic transition: Minister of Education (1985–1986) and Chief of Staff (1986–1987). Known for a discreet manner and skill at political negotiation, he took part in the founding of the PFL and served two terms as Vice President of the Republic (1995–2002) alongside Fernando Henrique Cardoso, temporarily assuming the presidency on constitutional occasions. In the Senate he chaired the Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Committee and acted as government leader at decisive moments, such as during the impeachment process of Fernando Collor. Also recognized in cultural circles, he was a member of the Pernambuco Academy of Letters and the Brazilian Academy of Letters. He received national and foreign honors and left a legacy tied to moderate political negotiation during redemocratization and to a long parliamentary career.
