Margaret Chase Smith was a Republican politician from the United States, notable for breaking gender barriers in Congress. She served as a member of the House of Representatives (1940–1949) and then as a U.S. senator from Maine (1949–1973), becoming the first woman to hold seats in both chambers of the federal legislature and the first to represent her state in both roles. A moderate, she gained national attention in 1950 when she denounced McCarthyist practices in her speech known as the "Declaration of Conscience," a stance that reinforced her reputation for independence and political integrity. In 1964 she sought the Republican nomination for president, becoming the first woman to receive a vote at the convention of a major party—an emblematic step forward for women’s participation at the highest levels of politics. When she retired from the Senate she held the record for length of service among Republican senators who were women, a legacy that underscored her political longevity and influence in the twentieth-century scene.
