Margarethe "Grethe" Cammermeyer is a Norwegian-American military officer and LGBTQ+ rights activist. Trained as a nurse with a master’s and a doctorate, she served as an Army nurse and rose to the rank of colonel in the Washington National Guard. Her military and academic work established her as a respected figure in military health care. In 1989, during a routine procedure, she disclosed that she was a lesbian, which prompted an administrative discharge process. The honorable discharge in 1992 was challenged in court; in 1994 a federal court ruled that excluding gays and lesbians from the armed forces was unconstitutional, a decision that allowed her to return to active service. She returned to serve as one of the few openly gay officers until retiring in 1997. Her story received wide public attention and inspired the television film Serving in Silence as well as her autobiography. After her military career she took part in public and political activities, ran for Congress, and served on defense advisory committees. She is remembered for her impact on the debate over sexual orientation in the armed forces and for her role in advancing equal service.
