Margherita Sarfatti was an Italian journalist, art critic, patron, and collector who emerged as a central figure in the cultural life of the early twentieth century. She hosted salons in Milan that brought together artists from Futurism and the Novecento Italiano, supporting painters and sculptors and fostering aesthetic debates that helped shape the period’s artistic renewal. As a columnist and biographer, she rose to prominence in the mid-1920s with a biography of Benito Mussolini that achieved wide international circulation. Her closeness to political leaders and her role as an adviser sought to link culture and propaganda during the formative years of the fascist regime, a position that brought her both notoriety and controversy. Born to a Jewish family, Sarfatti’s life was marked by personal and political reversals: she converted to Catholicism in the 1930s, lost influence with those in power, and, faced with the 1938 racial laws, went into exile in South America. After World War II she returned to Italy and resumed her involvement in the art world, leaving a legacy as a patron, critic, and guiding figure for important Italian art movements.
