Margo Symington MacDonald was a Scottish politician, teacher and broadcaster, known for her long parliamentary career and her passionate advocacy of social causes. The daughter of a nurse, she trained as a physical education teacher and entered politics early when she won the landmark 1973 Glasgow Govan by-election for the Scottish National Party (SNP), later serving as the party’s deputy leader from 1974 to 1979. Over the decades she moved between roles and affiliations: after a temporary departure from the SNP she returned to public life as a radio and television presenter and, in the 1990s, was elected in 1999 to the Scottish Parliament representing Lothian. She became known for independent and dissenting positions within the SNP, which led her in 2003 to sit as an independent MSP — a status in which she was re-elected in 2003, 2007 and 2011. MacDonald was prominent in campaigning for Scottish independence, left‑wing causes and controversial issues such as legalizing euthanasia and the rights of sex workers. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, she brought the condition into public debate, using her personal experience to argue for end‑of‑life choice. She died in 2014, leaving a legacy of combative politics and a strong media presence in Scotland’s public life.
