Margrave Friedrich I of Brandenburg-Ansbach was a German noble of the Hohenzollern dynasty who ruled Ansbach from 1486 and Bayreuth from 1495. A son of Margrave Albrecht III Achilles, he was notable for key dynastic alliances, including his marriage to Sophia Jagiellon, daughter of King Casimir IV of Poland, which produced numerous children who played significant political roles in Central Europe. His rule was marked by an extravagant lifestyle that exhausted the margraviate's finances and provoked a dynastic crisis. In 1515 he was deposed by his two eldest sons, Casimir and George, who imprisoned him in Plassenburg Castle; the family dispute was only partly settled by an agreement in 1522 after intense tensions and interventions by other princes of the House of Brandenburg. Among his children were prominent figures: Albert became the first Duke of Prussia, while others held ecclesiastical posts or married into European ruling houses, extending the family's influence. The episode of Friedrich I’s deposition and imprisonment illustrates the power and succession conflicts typical of the German Renaissance nobility and leaves a controversial legacy regarding governance and domestic authority.
