Maria Branyas Morera was a Catalan-born supercentenarian born in the United States, recognized for having lived 117 years and 168 days. Her life spanned major events of the 20th century: a childhood marked by transatlantic immigration, a return to Catalonia during World War I, and service as a nurse alongside her husband during the Spanish Civil War. She married Joan Moret, an orthopedic surgeon, in 1931 and spent most of her life in Girona, where the couple had three children. Over the decades she balanced work in healthcare with cultural and family commitments; she kept simple habits and, in advanced age, practiced music and gymnastics. In 2000 she moved to a care home in Olot, where she remained known for her lucidity and calm routine. In 2020 she attracted attention for recovering from COVID-19 and advocating for better care for older people, and her experience became associated with research on the pandemic’s impact in eldercare institutions. When she died on 19 August 2024, she was considered the world’s oldest living person, leaving a legacy as a symbol of longevity and an advocate for the dignity of older adults.
