Maria de las Mercedes de Orleans (1860–1878) was Queen consort of Spain as the first wife of Alfonso XII, a role she held from January to June 1878. The daughter of the Duke of Montpensier and Infanta Luísa Fernanda, she belonged to the Orléans family and was raised in Seville, where she formed lasting emotional ties. Her marriage to Alfonso XII, celebrated at the Basilica of Atocha, had strong political and symbolic resonance in a country recently restored to the monarchy. Mercedes’s premature death at eighteen from typhus turned her brief marriage into a subject of public mourning and a romantic myth, inspiring songs, novels, and film adaptations that popularized the story of her love for the king. The popular response and the king’s mourning shaped the collective imagination of the Bourbon Restoration. Among her symbolic legacies is the impetus attributed to the construction of the Almudena Cathedral, begun after her death, and the public memory preserved in place names such as the Plaza de la Reina in Valencia. Initially interred at El Escorial, her remains were moved to the cathedral in 2000, in accordance with a wish she expressed during her life.
