Maria Martins (Maria de Lourdes Faria Alves) was a Brazilian multidisciplinary artist—sculptor, draftsman, printmaker, painter, writer and musician—whose work left an imprint on surrealism in Brazil. Trained in painting in Paris, she turned to sculpture at thirty, mastering techniques in wood, terracotta, marble and lost-wax casting; she made bronze her principal medium. Her pieces, with organic, sensual forms, engage myths, archaic cultures and Amazonian nature, attracting the attention of surrealist figures such as André Breton and Max Ernst. International exhibitions opened the path to her recognition: she exhibited in Washington, Paris and New York, and institutions including the MoMA acquired her work. In Brazil she took part in the first São Paulo Biennial (1951) and was awarded at the 1955 Biennial as best national sculptor. Her works are held in major collections—MAM-RJ, MAM-SP, Paço das Artes, the Palácio do Planalto and foreign collections—and continue to be a reference in the history of modern sculpture in the country.
